Gabriele Baratto was interviewed by Patrizia Rapposelli for il T Quotidiano about the series of smash-and-grab burglaries reported in Trento over recent months.
In the interview, Baratto stresses the need to move beyond a purely criminal justice response. Without underestimating the seriousness of these offences and their consequences for shopkeepers and residents, many of these incidents should also be understood as manifestations of deeper problems, including addiction and severe social marginalisation. Repressive measures should therefore be accompanied by social interventions addressing the underlying causes of the phenomenon.
